Dalam Untaian Nada, Memertahankan Kemerdekaan (Seri Tulisan Indonesia Merdeka)

Perjuangan bangsa Indonesia dalam memertahankan kemerdekaan tidak hanya berkisah tentang mengangkat senjata di medan laga, melontarkan peluru dari ujung senapan, atau bersua dengan musuh di meja perundingan. Kisah perjuangan memertahankan kemerdekaan juga dilakukan melalui alunan musik, dan sosok pahlawan yang memertahankan kemerdekaan melalui nada lagu yang teduh dan menghentak jiwa ialah : Ismail Marzuki.

Kala Indonesia merdeka pada 17 Agustus 1945, putra Betawi ini turut bergabung dengan para pejuang kemerdekaan, kendati Ismail Marzuki bukanlah berasal dari kalangan militer. Ia memilih berjuang melalui untaian nada serta menciptakan lagu bertema perjuangan, pun Ismail Marzuki mengabdikan diri untuk Radio Republik Indonesia.

Ismail Marzuki, adalah sosok yang mencintai Indonesia, hal ini terbukti dari beberapa lagunya yang menggelorakan semangat nasionalisme, seperti : Indonesia Pusaka, Rayuan Pulau Kelapa, Halo-Halo Bandung, Selendang Sutera, Kopral Jono, Aryati, Sepasang Mata Bola, Melati di Tapal Batas, dan Bandung Selatan di Waktu Malam.

Sesarinya, lagu-lagu Ismail Marzuki sarat akan semangat nasionalisme yang beriringan dengan nuansa romantika. Lagunya sering berirama lembut, menyejukkan, dan meneduhkan jiwa. Hal tersebut seperti terekam dalam lagu Selendang Sutera atau Sepasang Mata Bola, keduanya diciptakan pada tahun 1946. Lagu Sepasang Mata Bola berkisah tentang pejuang dari Jakarta yang menyambangi Yogyakarta guna memertahankan benteng terakhir Republik Indonesia dari serbuan Tentara Belanda, sebagaimana dalam lirik lagu tersebut:

Hampir malam di Jogja, ketika keretaku tiba

Remang-remang cuaca, terkejut aku tiba-tiba

Dua mata memandang, seakan-akan ia berkata

Lindungi aku pahlawan, daripada si angkara murka

Sepasang Mata Bola, dari balik jendela

Datang dari Jakarta, menuju medan perwira

Kagumku melihatnya, sinar sang perwira rela

Hati telah terpikat semoga kelak kita berjumpa pula

Bakat musik Ismail Marzuki diwarisi dari sang ayah. Saat duduk di bangku sekolah, Ismail Marzuki selalu mendapatkan hadiah alat musik—sebagai hadiah kenaikan kelas. Ismail Marzuki—yang sering dipanggi Bang Maing atau Bang Maling—menggunakan alat-alat musik tersebut untuk merangsang bakatnya, di usianya yang menapaki 17 tahun ia telah menciptakan lagu berjudul “O Sarinanh”.

Kemahirannya dalam bermusik membawanya mengisi siaran musik di Radio NIROM (Nederlandsch-Indische Radio Omroep Maatschappij), radio milik pemerintah Hindia-Belanda. Ismail Marzuki yang lahir pada 11 Mei 1914 di Batavia ini, kemudian menikah dengan Eulis Zuraidah, penyanyi keroncong asal Bandung.

Ismail Marzuki yang menciptakan lebih dari seratusan lagu ini dianugerahi gelar pahlawan melalui Kepres No. 89/TK/2004, anugerah pahlawan tersebut diberikannya bersama dengan lima putra terbaik bangsa yakni: Maskoen Soemadiredja, Andi Mappanyukki, Raja Ali Haji, K.H. Achmad Ri’fai, dan Gatot Mangkoepradja.

Ismail Marzuki mengembuskan nafas terakhirnya pada 25 Mei 1958 di Jakarta. Ia dipanggil ke hadirat Ilahi dalam usia yang terbilang muda, 44 tahun. Walaupun ia meninggal di usia muda, akan tetapi karyanya tetap abadi tak lekang oleh zaman.
