Namanya jarang atau bahkan mungkin tidak akan ditemukan dalam buku sejarah anak sekolahan, namun siapa sangka dibalik sosok Nasrani taat pun berdarah Tionghoa, ia punya peranan besar dalam memertahankan kemerdekaan, terutama sepak terjangnya dalam menembus blokade ekonomi Belanda di lautan. Ia adalah Laksamana Muda Jhon Lie, dalam setiap pelayarannya, di tangannya tergenggam erat Al-Kitab.
Lakasamana Muda Jhon Lie, lahir pada 9 Maret 1911 dengan nama LieTjeng Tjoan adalah putra dari pasangan suami istri Lie Kae Tae dan Oei Tjeng Nie Nio. Semasa kanak-kanak Jhon Lie sempat mengenyam pendidikan di sekolah etnik Tionghoa, Hollands Chinese School (HCS) sebelum dipindahkan ke Christelijke Lagere School.(Muthakin 2015:71).Jhon Lie menempuh pendidikan di sekolah ini selama tujuh tahun (1920-1927). Di sekolah inilah Jhon Lie bersentuhan dengan nilai-nilai kristiani (Nursam 2008 : 39-40).
Jhon Lie kecil dikenal sebagai seorang anak yang gemar bermain, termasuk menikmati desiran angin laut di pelabuhan. Dalam satu riwayat disebutkan Jhon Lie melihat sebuah kapal eskader milik Angkatan Laut Kerajaan Belanda. Ingin rasanya ia menaiki kapal tersebut, akan tetapi Jhon Lie tidak bisa memenuhi hasrat hatinya. Akhirnya Jhon Lie nekat berenang mendekati kapal dan menaikinya. Semenjak kejadian itulah Jhon Lie bertekad dan bercita-cita menjadi seorang pelaut (Muthakin 2015)
Di usianya yang masih belia, 18 tahun. Jhon Lie berhasil mencapai cita-citanya dengan menjadi kelasi kapal dan stuurman (juru mudi) di Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM) hingga tahun 1942. Ketika masa pendudukan Jepang di Hindia – Belanda (1942-1945) Jhon Lie sempat bekerja di Angkatan Laut Sekutu dengan jabatan Tenaga Bantuan Operasional bagi Angkatan Laut Inggris.
Setahun setelah Indonesia Merdeka, dengan menumpang kapal Ophir, Jhon Lie pulang ke Indonesia bermaksud turut serta dalam perjuangan memertahankan kemerdekaan dengan bergabung pada Angkatan Laut Republik Indonesia, mula-mulanya ia berpangkat Matroos Derde Klass atau Kelasi III, namun perjalanan karirnya terbilang moncer, hanya berselang setahun ia dipromosikan menjadi Mayor dan memimpin operasi penyelundupan senjata bersama kapal yang dipimpinnya,The Outlaw.
Misi pertama Jhon Lie dilaksanakan pada bulan Oktober 1947. Dari Singapura Kapal The Outlaw berlayar menuju Labuan Bilik dengan membawa perlengkapan militer, senjata semi otomatis, peluru 1.000 pound, dan perbekalan seperlunya. Misi tersebut terbilang sukses karena berhasil mengecoh patroli Angkatan Laut Kerajaan Belanda. Kapal The Outlaw berhasil lego jangkar di Labuan Bilik. Muatan kapal yang terdiri dari senjata dan amunisi tersebut segera dibongkar dan diserah terimakan kepada Bupati Usman Effendi beserta Komandan Batalion Abu Samah (Muthakin 2015:71).
Dalam pelayarannya membawa misi penyelundupan demi kepentingan bangsa Indonesia, Jhon Lie tercatat paling sedikit 15 kali melakukan operasi penyelundupan. Pernah suatu waktu, kapal The Outlaw membawa 18 drum minyak kelapa sawit. Jhon Lie ditangkap perwira Inggris, akan tetapi pengadilan Singapura membemaskan Jhon Lie karena tidak terbukti melanggar hukum.
Keberhasilan Jhon Lie dalam menerobos blokade Belanda membuat BBC London sering kali menyiarkan dalam siaran bertianya tentang keberhasilan Jhon Lie dan kapal The Outlaw dalam mengelabui patroli angkatan laut Kerajaan Belanda hingga BBC menyematkan julukan pada kapal The Outlaw dengan sebutan “The Black Speedboat”.
Keberhasilan Jhon Lie dalam menyelundupkan senjata ke Indonesia guna membantu para pejuang memertahankan kemerdekaan tidak selamanya berjalan dengan mulus, adakalanya Jhon Lie mendapatkan rintangan-rintangan. Akan tetapi kepiawaian Jhon Lie memimpin kapal dalam menghadapi musuh di lautan membuat seorang wartawan bernama Roy Rowan dari Life Magazine—majalah ternama terbitan Amerika Serikat—mewawancari Jhon Lie.
Dalam wawancaranya yang diterbitkan Life Magazine edisi 26 Oktober 1949, Roy Rowan menuliskan bahwa Jhon Lie adalah seorang pejuang yang taat kepada agamanya, di setiap perjalannya Jhon Lie selalu membawa bibble (Al-Kitab) yang menjadi motivasinya dalam berjuang. Oleh karenanya, Jhon Lie mendapat julukan The Great Smuggler with The Bibble atau Penyelundup Besar yang Selalu Membawa Al-Kitab (Nursam 2008).
